Assistive Technology Act Promises Bright Future for Individuals with Disabilities
One of the many things that give wheelchair-bound individuals and others with disabilities strength is seeing how rapidly technology changes, leading to optimism that their lives will be made easier and easier in coming years. Continued technological advancements have resulted in more and more conveniences that have helped level the playing field for them in their careers, jobs, relationships and everyday life.
The Assistive Technology Act of 1998 aims to increase and foster the growth of technology that impacts the lives of individuals with disabilities. This valuable tool builds on the strides made by its predecessor, the Technology-Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities Act of 1988. The ATA affirms the role of technology in increasing the quality of life for Americans with disabilities and affirms the role of federal government in promoting access to assistive technology devices and services. Additionally, states are granted the flexibility to respond to the assistive technology needs of their citizens with disabilities.
So what is an assistive technology device? The ATA defines it as “any item, piece of equipment or product system, whether acquired commercially, modified or customized, that is used to increase, maintain or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities.” Under the Assistive Technology Act, all states and outlying areas are eligible to receive 10 years of federal funding for their state assistive technology program. This funding gives states the support they need to sustain and strengthen their capacity to address the assistive technology needs of individuals with disabilities. The ATA supports technology investments across federal agencies and departments, micro-loan programs for individuals, and continuity grants for capacity building and advocacy activities.
